Will Smith Banned from Oscars Ceremony and Events associated with Academy Awards for 10 Years After Slappin Chris Rock.
The Academy said Will Smith’s behaviour was “unacceptable and harmful”
Will Smith formally resigned from the Academy a week ago and said he would “accept any further consequences the Board deems appropriate”
12 days after Will Smith smacked Chris Rock onstage at the 94th Annual Oscars at the Dolby Theatre in Hollywood, the Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences has decided on a repercussion under its guidelines.
The Academy’s Board of Governors met virtually on Friday to discuss the situation determining that “for a period of 10 years from April 8, 2022, Mr. Smith shall not be permitted to attend any Academy events or programs, in person or virtually, including but not limited to the Academy Awards,” according to a letter sent by Academy President David Rubin and CEO Dawn Hudson.
The statement says “During our telecast, we did not adequately address the situation in the room. For this, we are sorry. This was an opportunity for us to set an example for our guests, viewers and our Academy family around the world, and we fell short — unprepared for the unprecedented,”
Hudson wrote, “We want to express our deep gratitude to Mr. Rock for maintaining his composure under extraordinary circumstances. We also want to thank our hosts, nominees, presenters and winners for their poise and grace during our telecast.”
The statement also says “This action we are taking today in response to Will Smith’s behavior is a step toward a larger goal of protecting the safety of our performers and guests, and restoring trust in the Academy. We also hope this can begin a time of healing and restoration for all involved and impacted.”
Smith said in a statement via his rep, “I accept and respect the Academy’s decision.”
This unfortunate incident sadly overshadowed the hard work of so many people on March 27, 2022. Will Smith won his first Oscar for his portrayal of Richard Williams in “King Richard” The Academy did not take back the award at the time and did not specify whether Smith can be nominated in future films moving forward but he’s been banned from attending The Oscars and associated events.
Is the 10 year ban too harsh or not harsh enough? Do you think the ban will go the distance or be lifted sooner? Will the shocking slap destroy Smith’s career or will the public and his peers forgive Will Smith if he receives help?
