Auston Matthews Breaks Rick Vaive’s Single Season Goal Scoring Record!
Congrats AUSTON MATTHEWS who scored his 55th and 56th goals of this season establishing a NEWWWWW Toronto Maple Leafs record!
Auston surpassed a record that has stood for 40 years in a 4-3 OT win over the Dallas Stars on Thursday night.
It was Matthews 66th game of the season and 400th game of his career.
24 year old Auston Matthews is currently playing in his 6th season with The Buds and his previous high was 47 goals in 70 games during the 2019-2020 season.
Only 4 players in Maple Leafs history have scored 50 plus goals in a season. Rick Vaive held the franchise record with 54 goals in the 1981-82 season and hit the 50 goal milestone 3 years in a row including 51 in 1982-1983 and 52 in 1983-1984 season. 2 other Leafs players are in the 50 Goal Club including Gary Leeman with 51 in 1989-90 and Dave Andreychuk with 53 in 1993-94.
The Maple Leafs have currently played 71 games this season and have 98 points. They are in 2nd place in the Atlantic Division behind the Florida Panthers with 104 points. The Leafs are back home to host the Canadiens in an original 6 battle Saturday night at Scotia Bank Arena. Habs beat the Devils 7-4 last night and upset the Leafs4-2 on March 26 in Montreal.
If the season started tonight the Leafs would play the Bruins in the First Round of the playoffs. Toronto has not won a first round series since 2004.
With 11 games to go how many more goals will Auston Matthews score? 60? 65? 70 or more?
