It was history in the making last night at the Scotiabank Arena and I was there to witness it! I kept telling my wife it’s going to happen tonight and probably an empty-netter and that’s exactly what happened!
For the first time in his career Auston Matthews has scored 50 goals in a season! Number 34 is the first place in 28 years to reach the 50 plateau and only the 4th player in Leafs history to reach the 50 Goals Club! Rick Vaive did it 3 times including 54 goals in 1981-82, 51 goals in 1982-83 and 52 goals in 1983-84, Gary Leeman with 51 goals in 1989-90 and Dave Adreychuk scored scored 53 goals in 1993-94 season.
Matthews and the Maple Leafs still have 15 games to play this season. Will AM score 55 or 60 or more goals?
The Leafs lost 4-2 to the Canadiens last Saturday but since have won 3 in a row including 5-2 over Florida Panthers on Sunday, 6-4 over Bruins on Tuesday and a 7-3 victory over the Winnipeg Jets on Thursday night. The Buds face the Flyers in the City of Brotherly love Saturday at 7pm.
Erik Kallgran picked up the win last night. Jack Campbell is expected to return Saturday Night. Petr Mrazek is out at least 6 weeks with a groin injury.
The Maple Leafs haven’t won the Stanley Cup! Is this the year they finally win it or at least win a first round series which they haven’t done since 2004.
