Today marks the 50th anniversary of the release of The Iconic “The Godfather” Movie in 1972!
Family is everything! “The Godfather” movie is based on Mario Puzo’s best selling novel of the same name in 1969 was co-written and directed by Francis Ford Coppola and considered by AFI, critics and fans as one the greatest movies of all time starring Marlon Brando, Al Pacino, James Caan, Robert Duvall, Diane Keaton and many more.
The epic trilogy of The Godfather premiered at the Loews Theatre in NYC on March 15th and officially in theatres everywhere in the USA and Canada on March 24, 1972. The Godfather Part II was released in December 20, 1974 and Part III December 25, 1990.
The Original Timeless Masterpiece cost between $6.72 Million and made $250-291 Million at the Box Office
FUN FACTS: The Wedding Scene took almost 4 days to shoot and featured over 350 extras. Sonny’s funeral scene cost over $100,00. The iconic line of “Leave the gun, take the cannoli by Clemeza played by Richard Castellano was improvised and not in the original script.
Francis Ford Coppola finally got a star in Hollywood! The Legendary director, producer, screenwriter became the 2,715th celebrity to receive a star on the Hollywood Walk of Fame on Monday, March 21, 2022 at 6667 Hollywood Boulevard in front of Musso & Frank Grill.
The ceremony was hosted by Ellen K and featured Elle Fanning and Talia Shire as special guest speakers at the ceremony.
Elle fanning said in her speech “In every email we’ve exchanged, you’ve always signed ‘Love, Uncle Francis’ so, I love you so much, Uncle Francis. There’s no one in the world more deserving than you. You should have all the stars on the street if it was up to me. I love you.”
Ana Martinez, producer of the Hollywood Walk of Fame said “Francis Ford Coppola is cinematic gold! His legendary career has been a huge part of Hollywood’s film history for decades. We are very proud to welcome him to the Hollywood Walk of Fame and we are thrilled to celebrate the 50th anniversary of one of Hollywood’s most famous films, ‘The Godfather’.”

Francis Ford Coppola was born in 1939 in Detroit, Michigan, to Italian immigrants and grew up in New York. He graduated with a degree in drama from Hofstra University and did graduate work at UCLA in filmmaking. He directed his first film “Dimentia 13” in 1963
Coppola is one of the most acclaimed filmmakers of our time; a six-time Academy Award-winning director, writer, and producer—including The Irving G. Thalberg Memorial Governors Award—for films such as Patton, The Godfather Trilogy, American Graffiti, The Conversation, Apocalypse Now, The Outsiders and Bram Stoker’s Dracula.
At 82 Coppola isn’t retiring anytime soon and is currently in pre-production on his upcoming film “Megalopolis” — a Roman epic set in modern times, which begins production in fall 2022.
Coppola is involved with the following charities: North Beach Citizens, Hofstra University, Khan Academy, UCLA Film school, Napa County Land Trust, St. Helena High School, and St. Helena Community Band. In addition, he’s on the board of directors for The Film Foundation.
